Phase Shift, is an effort to address global industrialism and commerce and their impact on the natural world and our human psyche. Investigating the artistic possibilities of industrial shrink wrap, Styrofoam, cardboard packaging, colored LED lights, black lights and video, I contrast these human-made materials with twigs, tree branches, string, and stones to construct armatures that are wrapped and constricted with sinuous polyethylene shrink wrap. I also place natural objects within industrial and commercial waste, or vice versa. Shrink wrap, in particular, also seems like an apt metaphor for the duality between civilization and nature, especially now that amount of “anthropomass” has now exceeded the total amount of biomass on earth. Being presently quite out of phase with our relationship with nature, my artworks look at the signals between nature and humankind like an electrical engineer with an oscilloscope scrutinizing electrical distortion.
